Discover EOS’s journey
Our History & Milestones
The Emirates Osteoporosis Society (EOS) was established in November 2006, succeeding the UAE Osteoporosis Club which began in May 2005. Since then, EOS has grown into an active member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and its Committee of National Societies (CNS).
Over the years, EOS has proudly organised and hosted impactful scientific meetings and public awareness campaigns. Notably, in October 2007, Dubai was selected by the IOF to host World Osteoporosis Day, featuring multiple scientific seminars, public awareness activities in shopping malls with free BMD testing, distribution of educational materials, and a community walkathon with media coverage.
Dubai was also the venue for the 4th Pan Arab Osteoporosis Congress in March 2008, organised by EOS. The congress welcomed more than 550 delegates from the UAE, the Gulf region, the wider Arab world and beyond.
EOS continues to hold regular scientific meetings at national level, attracting health professionals from across the UAE. Meetings are accredited by the Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) and Ministry of Health (MOH), providing valuable Continuing Medical Education (CME) hours.
In November 2010, a new EOS Board of Directors was elected in Abu Dhabi under the supervision of the Emirates Medical Association (EMA). The Society’s largest national meeting to date was held in Ras Al Khaimah from 31st March to 2nd April 2011, offering nine CME-accredited hours and featuring ten distinguished speakers — nine local and one international — with over 110 participants.
Looking ahead, EOS is proud to collaborate with the IOF and the Pan Arab Osteoporosis Society to host the first IOF Regional Meeting for the Middle East and Africa in Dubai in October 2011. Once again, Dubai has been chosen by the IOF as the official venue for the World Osteoporosis Day celebrations that year.
EOS remains committed to its mission of promoting bone health through education, research and public engagement.
